In this chapter, the authors aim to examine the relationship between quality of life – measured using principal component analysis (PCA) – and a proxy variable for brain drain. Due to the limited availability of direct data on skilled emigration, they use a perception-based indicator from the World Yearbook, which reflects the extent to which brain drain is seen as a barrier to national competitiveness. To measure quality of life, the authors construct a composite index based on a set of economic, social and demographic indicators sourced from the World Bank. The relationship between quality of life and brain drain is actively studied within the frameworks of migration and institutional economic theories. Future research could benefit from more granular data on actual skilled migration flows, as well as qualitative insights into migrants’ motivations.
